THE STORY
The Urban Micro Home, designed and constructed by Wind River, is a 650 sq ft permanent foundation house located in beautiful Chattanooga, Tennessee. The genesis of design started with the owner’s request for a 600 sq ft home. We worked with them on a layout that adhered to building code (stairwell, passageway size, clearances, etc.) without compromising the small footprint they were hoping for. They also wanted open space for entertaining and functionality that fit their outdoor hobbies.
Despite the small size, The Urban Micro Home can comfortably host a crowd. The two-panel glass garage door opens to 150 sq ft of deck space, stepping down to another 300 sq ft of outdoor space with pea gravel and a fire pit. The garage door allows people to flow in and out of the house, seamlessly connecting the kitchen and indoor space with the deck and patio. The owners were outdoorsy and tri-athletes. To integrate the home with the owners’ outdoor hobbies, we added a 3-to-1 pulley system in the carport where they can easily lift a kayak off the roof of their Subaru, and another 3-to-1 pulley system for a paddle board inside the house above the living area that rests across a Shou Sugi Ban pine tongue and groove panel. The house also came with a training bike hooked up to a rechargeable battery just for kicks, and we inlaid bike gears into the custom concrete countertop on the bar for a unique touch that fit the dwellers.
The Urban Micro Home features reclaimed wood wainscoting from an old elk lodge in Chattanooga, various Shou Sugi Ban accents, and premium fixtures. Additionally, smart home technology includes the thermostat, door bell, cameras, smoke detectors, ceiling fan, and integrated speakers.
Wind River Tiny Homes is not currently building permanent foundation homes. We are focusing on tiny homes on wheels (THOW), which you can find in our models page. However, the plans for the Urban Micro Home can be purchased here.
